Lakewood Ranch DUI Lawyer
A Lakewood Ranch DUI is prosecuted in the county where the stop or arrest happened: generally Manatee County north of University Parkway, with court in Bradenton, and Sarasota County south of it, with court in downtown Sarasota. In either county, you have 10 days from the date on your notice of suspension to request review of the administrative license suspension.
Lakewood Ranch is a master-planned community that spans Manatee and Sarasota counties east of I-75. Daniel D. Nawara is a former Assistant State Attorney in Florida's Twelfth Judicial Circuit, which covers both counties. His firm handles only criminal defense, including DUI cases from both sides of Lakewood Ranch. Call or text (941) 920-5514, available 24/7.
Which county and court will hear my case?
Lakewood Ranch's own guidance says that, in general, villages south of University Parkway are in Sarasota County and villages north of it are in Manatee County. What counts is where the stop or arrest happened, not your home address or mailing address. Your citation and court notice will name the county.
Manatee side (generally north of University Parkway):
Arresting agency: usually the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, or the Florida Highway Patrol on I-75 and state roads.
Booking: Manatee County Central Jail, 14470 Harlee Road, Palmetto.
Court: Manatee County Judicial Center, 1051 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton, FL 34205.
Records: Manatee Clerk court records search.

Sarasota side (generally south of University Parkway):
Arresting agency: usually the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, or FHP.
Booking: Sarasota County Correctional Facility, 2020 Main Street, Sarasota, FL 34237. The Sheriff's Office says its pre-booking area is set up for arresting agencies to do paperwork and Intoxilyzer breath tests in DUI cases.
Court: Sarasota County's South County Judicial District covers only land south of Blackburn Point Road (Twelfth Circuit Administrative Order 2026-12.2). So a misdemeanor DUI from Lakewood Ranch is heard in downtown Sarasota, at the Judge Lynn N. Silvertooth Judicial Center (2002 Ringling Blvd.) or another downtown court building listed on your notice, rather than in Venice.
Records: Sarasota ClerkNet.

Stops near the line. A stop that begins in one county and ends in the other can raise questions about which county prosecutes and which agency's records matter. Bring the citation and any crash report to your consultation so the location can be checked.
Your first 10 days after a Lakewood Ranch DUI arrest
The license process is the same in both counties because it runs through FLHSMV, not the local court. Under section 322.2615, if you tested 0.08 or higher or refused a test, you have 10 days from the issue date of the notice of suspension to:
request a formal or informal review of the suspension, or
request eligibility review for a restricted license under section 322.271(7), if you qualify. Accepting it waives the formal and informal review.
Doing nothing lets the suspension run: 6 months for a first suspension at 0.08 or higher, or 1 year for a first refusal. A request does not pause the suspension. Read the 10-day rule, formal review hearings and hardship licenses. Drivers under 21 should also read under-21 DUI in Florida.
First appearance and bond
Manatee: The Sheriff's Office says arrestees who do not bond out routinely see a judge within 24 hours. In misdemeanor cases, the judge may accept a guilty plea at that hearing.
Sarasota: Florida Rule of Criminal Procedure 3.130 requires that a person in custody be brought before a judicial officer within 24 hours of arrest. The Sarasota Sheriff's Office says booking includes a Pre-Trial Services interview.
A guilty or no-contest plea to DUI at first appearance results in a conviction, because Florida law does not allow a withhold of adjudication for DUI (s. 316.656). Read first appearance and bond reduction.
Treatment courts: a difference between the counties
The Twelfth Circuit's DUI Court is a Sarasota County program. The court describes it as aimed at people currently charged with DUI who have one or more prior alcohol- or drug-related arrests and are alcohol- or drug-dependent. Participants enter a plea, serve at least one year of supervised probation and pay program fees. The circuit does not list a DUI Court for Manatee County. It lists other Manatee treatment courts, such as Drug Court, Veterans Treatment Court and Comprehensive Treatment Court. Eligibility is set by each program. Some first-time, non-aggravated DUI cases in either county may be reviewed for DETER, the State Attorney's DUI diversion program. Eligibility is decided by the prosecutor, and it is not a dismissal. See the DETER program.
Penalties are the same in both counties
DUI penalties come from state law, so they are the same on either side of University Parkway. For a first conviction under section 316.193, the fine is $500 to $1,000, and jail is up to 6 months. At 0.15 or higher, or with a minor in the vehicle, those rise to $1,000 to $2,000 and up to 9 months. Other first-conviction terms include probation, 50 hours of community service, DUI school, a 10-day vehicle impoundment, and a license revocation of at least 180 days and up to 1 year (s. 322.28). Since October 1, 2025, a first breath- or urine-test refusal after a lawful DUI arrest is also a second-degree misdemeanor (s. 316.1939; ch. 2025-121). See first DUI in Florida and refusing a breath test.
What a defense review looks at
Whether the stop was lawful, using body-camera and dash-camera video.
Whether field sobriety exercises were explained, performed and scored properly, and any medical or physical factors.
Breath-test validity: the observation period, instrument maintenance and operator permits. See breath test defense.
If you refused, what you were told about implied consent, and when.
Whether the evidence supports options short of trial, such as a reduction to reckless driving. No outcome is automatic.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lakewood Ranch in Manatee or Sarasota County?
Both. In general, the area north of University Parkway is in Manatee County and the area south of it is in Sarasota County. The county where you were stopped prosecutes the case, and your citation names it.
Will a Sarasota-side Lakewood Ranch DUI go to the Venice courthouse?
Generally no. Under Administrative Order 2026-12.2, the South County district covers land south of Blackburn Point Road, so Lakewood Ranch cases are heard in downtown Sarasota. Always follow the location on your notice.
Who arrests people for DUI in Lakewood Ranch?
Usually the Manatee County Sheriff's Office on the Manatee side and the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office on the Sarasota side. The Florida Highway Patrol also makes DUI arrests, especially on I-75.
Does it matter which county I live in?
For the criminal case, the location of the offense controls, not your home. The license suspension is handled statewide by FLHSMV either way.
Do you have an office in Lakewood Ranch?
The office is in downtown Sarasota at 240 N. Washington Blvd., Suite 460, Sarasota, FL 34236. Many consultations can be handled by phone or video.
